Gloria Hassett

Gloria Kaniecki Hassett of Rogers City died
on November 19, 2013 at Alpena Regional Medical
Center after 90 years on earth.

She is survived by:
her devoted daughters, Monica Hassett of New Mexico,
Clare (Larry) Taylor of Sterling Heights, and
Stephanie Hassett of Rogers City,
four beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth (Brian) Knight,
Gloria (David) Garman, Kathryn Rucker and
James Easterly.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Joseph Hassett who died
in April 1989.

Gloria’s elementary school years were spent at St Bernard’s School,
Alpena. In 1940 she graduated from Rogers City High School. Her
further musical education was in Cincinnati Ohio at the Anathacum of
Ohio. She earned a Master’s Degree in early elementary education at
Central Michigan University. During part of the World War II years she
was secretary-clerk at the Office of Price Administration in Rogers City.
She also became full-time organist at St. Ignatius Church, a career from
which she retired 45 years later. The Presque Isle County Library was
newly established when Gloria applied for the librarian’s position. She
supervised the library operations, occasionally driving the Bookmobile
around the county, While still at the library, she was asked to be a
temporary elementary grade teacher at St. Ignatius School. This
temporary position lasted for 34 years. In 1987, she was selected as one
of only four outstanding educators in the Diocese of Gaylord. She retired
from teaching in June 1997,
Traveling has been one of her pleasures having been throughout the
United States and abroad from England to Italy, Spain, Russia, and
Greece.

Her full and meaningful life will be celebrated at a Memorial Mass at
St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Saturday, November 23rd at 10:00 a.m,
with Fr. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating. Friends may gather at church
1 hour prior to Mass.

Inurnment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Alpena.

Memorials may be given in memory of Gloria Hassett
to St. Ignatius Catholic School.
